Wangaratta Private Hospital History
In 1989 Geoff Carruthers, Executive Director of Wangaratta Regional
Development Corporation (WRDC) approached Geoff Dreher, Managing
Director of Healthscope Limited, on behalf of the WRDC to ask
if Healthscope would consider building and operating a private
hospital in Wangaratta.
Through the concentrated efforts of the Wangaratta community
and the foresight of the WRDC which staunchly believed in the
project and the future economic development of Wangaratta, Wangaratta
Private Hospital was begun.
In March 1992, after an extraordinary amount of work by Mr Carruthers
and his team at the WRDC, as well as the staff of Healthscope,
a licence was granted by the Victorian Government to operate
a 40 bed acute general private hospital in Wangaratta.
Architect Colin Stevens of Eggleston MacDonald, was chosen to
provide an innovative and unique design for the Hospital and
Hooker Cockram became the successful tenderer for the building
which commenced in September 1993. Inpatient services were commenced
on 22nd November 1994.
Wangaratta Private Hospital, now owned and operated by Ramsay
Healthcare, is a 36-bed Acute Medical and Surgical hospital.
